The Weigh-In Week 64

217.4! That's what it said on the scale this morning! A loss of 2.6 pounds!!!

Once again I was wrong in my guess. Yesterday I said today's loss would be much less than I was hoping for. Turns out it was much more than I was hoping for. I expected a loss of 1 pound or less. I was hoping for a loss of 2 pounds. Losing nearly 3 pounds did not seem in the cards for this week. So to say I am happy would be a dramatic understatement.

Those long runs really do help. Between the calories and the sweat I probably left more than a pound on the treadmill yesterday.

I made 6 miles in 65 minutes yesterday. My training had me doing 6 miles in 60 minutes. I ended up having to walk more than I wanted and was pretty disappointed...but then I remembered it was only like a month and a half ago that I was barely making 4 miles in an outing. So making six any way I can is still a darn good accomplishment, especially after a week and a half off from running and a bum leg.

Our big winner this week is the always optimistic Andrew. Andrew if you didn't live in New Zealand I'd send you an eggplant as a prize, but it would probably rot by the time it got to you. And there's that whole "it's illegal to send produce to a foreign country thing".

We are hoping to finishing painting the house this weekend and I have a seven mile run scheduled with my Dad for Sunday morning. A busy weekend to say the least. Let's just hope the weather cooperates.

Have a great weekend everybody.

Guess How Much I Weigh Contest - Week 64

Want to here something amazing? I ate eggplant last night....and liked it. Thanks to my lovely wife and her savvy cooking skills.

Those of you who know my aversion to all things vegetable should be suitably awed.

I know that eggplant is not technically a vegetable...but close enough.

Getting back on track is coming along, slowly but surely.

My back pain is pretty much gone, unfortunately there is some residual weakness in my left leg that won't go away. So, I have to go see a specialist next week and possibly have an MRI. Not something I am excited about.

The leg didn't really hurt on my short run on Tues. And since I have wasted way to much time not running, I have decide to go ahead with my training for now...at least until a doctor tells me to stop.

Which means a six mile run today. Probably on the treadmill from the look of the weather outside.

As for this weeks weigh-in, there should be a loss, but a much smaller one than I was hoping for.

Step right up, step right up.
Guess how much I weigh and win a fabulous prize.

To Recap:
Every Thursday I give you my stats for the week and you guess what you think the scale will say on Friday morning. The winner is the first person who guesses my weight / weight loss for the week without going over or the person who is closest without going over. Go ahead and click on comments at the bottom of this post and leave your guess.

I will post the winner when I post my weight on Fri. morning. If we get ten or more guesses I will have a prize for the winner.

Back On Track...Hopefully

My back is starting to feel better. I'm not 100% yet but I am getting there.

I am heading out in a little while to try my first run in over a week. Fingers crossed.

My running is not the only thing that has gotten off track, my eating has gotten a little out of hand as well.

Between the back pain and a stressful week last week, I let my food discipline fall to the way side.

Actually, as Laura pointed out last week my eating has gotten pretty lax over the last month. Sort of a gradual downhill slide.

So time to reign things in and start making smart choices again. Not to mention I have to start fitting in to all the winter clothes I bought last year when I was at my lowest weight.

Wish me luck on the run.

The Weigh-In Week 63

220! That's what it said on the scale this morning. A gain of one heck of a lot!

Not a lot of time this morning due to car trouble and another chiropractic appointment, so I'll just say, I am darn glad this week is over and I am looking forward to a fresh start on Monday!

Have a great weekend everybody.

Guess How Much I Weigh Contest - Week 63

My back is starting to feel better. It's got a little ways to go but at least I'm not wincing in pain every time I stand up.

Unfortuntley it seems one of the side effects of all the Advil I am taking is....well let's just say things aren't move any too fast.

So I am kida bloated at the momment... and I have no clue how that is going to effect weigh-in, but I can't imagine it is going to be good.

Good News, Bad News

I had every intention of posting yesterday...but yesterday turned into one of the crummiest days on record. In fact it started out crummy then had some crappy piled on and ended with a whole load of pure suckiness.

The worst news is my back is out again. After painting the house all day Friday and Saturday I woke up with a sore back on Sunday and by Monday I was barely able to get off the couch.

I landed at the chiropractor yesterday and I am feeling a little better but it's looking like no running again this week.

Which really sucks because I had an awesome run on Sunday. I made my first 7-mile run!!! My dad and I hit the road on Sunday morning and made a 7-mile loop in 1 hour and 14 minutes. No records were broken, but it was an amazing run nonetheless.

I know I keep saying this, but never in a million years did I think I would be running 7-miles.

I am learning I really like having someone to run with on these long runs. Since we were running a slightly slower pace, my dad and I were able to chat the whole time which made the miles fly by.

I think I am going to have to find some running partners for my Sunday runs.

The other big news this weekend was my daughter Ellie attempting to water ski. Did I mention she is only 2-1/2?

I'll post some pictures and tell the story later. Busy week here in The Twin Cities! And I'm not even protesting the RNC.

I'm off to the chiropractor again.

The Weigh-In Week 63

217.2! That's what it said on the scale this morning! A loss of 2 pounds.

I told you that 2 pound gain last week would be gone this week. Now I just have to keep the moment going again.

My 7 mile run on Sunday should help. Although, I have to tell you I am a little anxious about it. I'm still not feeling up to speed with running yet. (Pun Intended.)

I did 5 miles on the treadmill and barely made it to 4 miles before I had to take a short walk break.

7 Miles may hurt but I am determined to do it.

Our big winner this week is my dad with a guess of 1.8. I have to say with so many votes this week i am a little surprised that no one guessed 2lbs on the nose.

Enjoy the holiday weekend everybody.

Guess How Much I Weigh Contest - Week 63

It would seem that my attempts to ride my bike to work are cursed.

On Tuesday night Laura and I had a rare date night so she picked me up at work with the plan that I would ride my bike in Wed. morning.

Wed. morning we awoke to the sound of thunder and pouring rain. I contemplated calling a cab, but by the time I had to leave the rain seemed to have subsided.

I was wrong.

I had only gotten about 5 minutes from home when the skies opened up and drenched me with 15 minutes of hard stinging rain.

My one saving grace was going to be the fact that I had finally printed out a map of my rote to work so for once I wasn't going to get lost and I didn't.

Unfortunately I found my "perfect route" completely ripped up by construction so I had to make a detour once again.

And then.... about a half mile from work I got a flat tire on my bike! Talk about insulting injury. I walked it in, tired, soaked and dirty.

There is a very good chance that was my last attempt to ride to work this year.

The rest of the week has gone well. It looks like I am heading for a good loss this week.

Although it is turning out to be a little harder to get my running back on track. Tues. I did a short 2 mile run and I thought I was going to die. Hopefully today's 5 mile run goes a little better.

Step right up, step right up.

The Weigh In

219.2! That's what it said on the scale this morning.

A bigger gain then I expected, but it will be gone next week.

The house painting is moving slow but picking up speed. Who knew two toddlers would slow us down so much....oh and the potty training doesn't help.

Did I mention we were masochists?

We are off to the state fair today for a well deserved day of fun, then back to the painting tomorrow.

Guess How Much I Weigh Contest Week 62

Hello.

It's been a while.

Let me reintroduce myself.

I'm the guy who can run 6 miles.

All at once.

Without walking.

In under 1 hour.

Sorry I've been absent all week. I may have forgot to mention that while on vacation I was taking a vacation from writing as well.

I am also taking a break from 10k training with the exception of the 6 mile run I made on Monday...which was awesome. I finished the run in 59:56...that still counts as under an hour!

We've been using our vacation to paint our house and I hurt everywhere...which is the main reason I am taking a break from the running this week. I am seriously soar from spending so much time on a ladder, painting over my head.

I will be getting back on track with running, eating, and writing next week.

As for this weeks weigh-in, I have no clue what to expect. I am thinking a little gain. I don't think all the painting is going to offset the big dinners and margaritas (it is vacation after all!).

So once again your guess is as good as mine.

Step right up, step right up.

THe Weigh-In Week 61

216.8! That's what it said on the scale this morning. A gain of .8

Not bad considering how bad I thought it was going to be.

I'm sure my big run yesterday helped.

I completed my first 5 mile run yesterday. I finished 5 miles in 46 minutes on the treadmill. It was also my first speed work workout. I burned nearly 900 calories during the run and probably sweated out 4 gallons of water.

This Sunday is supposed to be my first 6-mile run. Even two months ago 6-miles would have seemed impossible to me...now it just seems scary, but doable. It's not going to be fast, but I plan on finishing.

Wish me luck.

Have a great weekend everybody.

Guess How Much I weigh Contest - Week 61

Same old story...different week. I can almost guarantee there is going to be a gain this week. I got busy, I got off track, and I ate out a few to many times...compounded by the fact that I didn't offset the eating out by eating way better on the none eating out days.

Operation; Eat It pretty much fell by the way side as well, which didn't help.

The good news is I continued to exercise without even a second thought despite the hectic week and I never fell into a binge situation which I have been want to do when I know a gain is inevitable.

Two steps forward, one step back.

The other good news? Life gets back to a normal schedule tomorrow, so I am back on track with Operation:Eat It and calorie tracking. We are on a staycation next week, and I plan to work super hard to stick to my workout routines and not snack myself to death. If you live in Minnesota and have an wild desire to do some house panting next week drop me a line. I hear it's good exercise.

Step right up, step right up.

The Wife Weighs In...Special Report

Happy Tuesday, GHMIW fans!

It’s funny how things happen. On Sunday, I went to an event thinking I was going to do a 2K walk with a stroller full of toddlers. I ended up unexpectedly running (and walking) my first 5K.

On Sunday, the entire family went to a 5K event to benefit SUDC (Sudden Unexplained Death in Children), organized by a local couple (friends of Nana Heather’s) who had recently lost a daughter. Tony, Evan (my brother-in-law), and Bob (my father-in-law) were running the race, along with my sister-in-law, Sister Sarah, who was running her first 5K in a number of years. I was there to do a 2K Family Fitness Walk and to cheer the rest of the family on.

When we went to check in, I realized that we had inadvertently registered me for the 5K. It was funny to be standing there with that race number in my hand.

Then, I started to think about it: "I need to get one more Couch-to-5K workout in this week. I complete 3.1 miles each time I do a treadmill workout. I’m dressed for it. I’ve already completed a 5K in 45 minutes. I’m thinking about doing that race in October…this is the exact same course. Even if I need to walk most of it, I’ll get my workout in and I’ll get a good look at the course. What the heck…what do I have to lose?"

So, I decided to take part in the race.

After a quick sock exchange (thanks, Mom!), I was ready to go. As I waited for the race to start, I sort of wondered what if I'd lost my mind...was I really going to do this?

I started running with Bob and Sarah, but it didn’t take long before I had to walk, so I let them go. I walked a little while longer. Once I caught my breath, I just started doing what I was supposed to do on the treadmill: 90 seconds running, two minutes walking. Because I didn’t have a watch, I counted right footsteps. 90 steps with the right foot running, 120 steps with the right foot walking…that was the goal.

I reached the end of the first mile at about 10:24. To be honest, I didn’t know I’d finished a mile at that point, I just thought, “It’s been only 10 minutes?”

I continued with my 90/120 strategy for as long as I could. The course was really hilly, though…that made it tough. A few times, I would be power-walking a hill and thinking, “I am going to start running as soon as I hit the top of this steep hill,” only to find another steep hill in front of me.

I went back to 90/120…sometimes 90/150…occasionally 90/180.

At one point I was passed by friends of ours who were running together, each with one hand on a stroller that was carrying their two children. I laughed to myself about the fact that I couldn’t keep up with them.

"Just keep swimming, just keep swimming."

Back to 90/120…I finished the second mile at 24:10.

I had been jockeying back and forth with a man and a woman throughout the race. We had passed each other a couple of times. Shortly after completing mile two, she said, “We’ve got to stop meeting like this.”

I said, “No, it’s great! It helps keep me on pace.”

“But you run faster than I do,” she said.

At that point, I told them that I hadn’t planned to run that day and that was in training to run my a 5K race later in the fall. Then, at that moment, the fit-looking young man asked a question I never dreamed anyone would ever ask me: “Wow. Are you a former athlete or something?” I couldn’t believe it.

I went back to 90/120. I had no idea how far I’d gone or how far I had left to run. About that time, I saw my father-in-law round the corner and come running down the hill toward me. He had already finished the race with Sarah and was coming back to look for me.

“Wow! I didn’t think you’d be so close behind,” he said. “I thought I was going to get some speed work in.”

We ran up the rest of the hill together. At the top of the hill, I told Bob I really needed to walk.
“No you don’t!" he said. "The finish line is right around the corner!” He talked me through the end of the race, reminding me to put my head up because my family would be taking pictures. We ran a little faster than my normal pace, but it was a good push to the end. I am so grateful for his coming back for me and for helping me to finish strong. (Thanks, Bob!)

My lungs were burning at the finish line, but it was worth it.

The fastest I’d completed 5K to that point was 45 minutes. Yesterday was the third session of the second week of my nine-week C25K program. My goal for my first race (to be run in October) was 35 minutes. Did I mention the course was hilly?

I finished the race at 37:12. My pace was 11:59 per mile.

I was tired, but proud of myself. I also surprised myself. I was a dancer, but I’ve never been athletic. I was the girl who would have found any excuse to get out of having to run. In elementary school, I was the girl who had trouble finishing the mile. To be able to say that I participated in a 5K race (on purpose!), that I decided to do it on the spur of the moment, that I didn’t finish dead last, and that I would be willing to do it again? This is all very surprising.

Someone asked me if I was looking forward to the next one. Looking forward to it? I don’t think that I would describe it that way. But, I know it’s something I have to do. And, more importantly, I know it’s something I can do.

Until Friday,

10K Training Revise

In light of my new 5K PR time I have tweaked my 10K training to be just a little more aggressive.

Click to see a larger version.

It makes me a little leery that all the runs are at such a slow pace. But, I figure Runners World is the expert, so for the next 9 weeks I will trust in their expertise.

I mean really. Who has the better insight into training, a magazine that has been the be-all-end-all running authority for 20 years* or some guy who just started running a year ago?

I'm going with the magazine on this one.

Another Great Race

...and a new Personal Record!

What a great day for a race. We have had some really good luck this summer with race day weather.

This race was billed as a family friendly race and the organizers went all out to hold to that. There was face painting, cake...

and even a bouncy house. It was a great day for the whole family.

Keep this one in mind for next summer if you are looking for your own 5K. You can find out all the details on Lauren's Run For A Reason here. A great event for a great cause.

And all the runners had a great race...including one surprise runner...but I'll let her tell her own story.

My sister finished the race looking strong and had a great time, crossing the finish in 36 minutes.

My brother-in-law flew ahead of all of us to finish in under 24 minutes!

And I had a new personal best time. I beat my previous 5K best by 32 seconds. My official time was 26:23, but by my watch it was 26:20!

And that new PR was set on the worlds hilliest 5K course* the day after I was attacked by a goat!

That's right attacked by a goat.

We took the girls to the Zoo on Saturday and I got caught in the middle of a goat feeding frenzy inside the petting Zoo.

While I was holding my daughter Ellie, a giant goat jumped up onto my chest to get at the food I was holding. The goat knocked me backwards into a little kid (real kid, not goat kid) which caused me to trip and go down hard against the fence.

Thank goodness Ellie was OK.

I got some pretty good cuts on my knee, elbow and hand...and ended up with one black-n-blue and very sore big toe. All of which makes my new personal 5K record even more impressive...at least in my mind.

All-in-all a pretty eventful weekend!

Tony
08/11 216 lbs
NEW GOAL: 208
8 lbs. to go

*Technically, I am sure this course was not the hilliest 5K course in the world...although it was extremely hilly...By far the hilliest 5K I have ever run.

The hilliest race course in the world may be the The Volcano Challenge in New Zealand in which racers are required to run up to the top of 5 of Auckland’s Volcanoes.

My friend Andrew did the race this weekend and I am seriously jealous...not so much of the running up hills but of the breathtaking views he had along the way. Check out his race report.

The Wife Weighs In...Week 40

Happy Friday, GHMIW fans!

I think I can officially say that I am back on track, and it feels great! This is my third week of at least three workouts a week. Hurray! I’ve been alternating between strength training and my C25K program, and I feel great! I’m hoping this is the beginning of a new “downward trend!”

Funny thing. After at the end of my treadmill session this morning, I made a big discovery. I’m not running fast enough! In fact, I think that increasing my speed from might even make running easier…something I’m going to try as part of my next session.

And now, my big announcement of the week…(drum roll, please!).

After 19 weeks of slugging it out, the number on the scale has finally hit a new low point! Granted, it was a difference of only two-tenths of a pound, but it is my first week of forward progress since before we went on vacation! This is a huge deal for me, psychologically. Really, truly, gigantic.

Now, I’m ready to keep the momentum going. One more pound lost and my BMI drops to 29, making me merely overweight and no longer obese. That’s big stuff. Here’s hoping we have a reason to celebrate next week!

Have a good weekend!

(a.k.a., Elle Tee Jay)

8/1/08: 186.0
8/8/08: 183.0 (a loss of 3 pounds!)
Total loss of 45.4 pounds
1.0 pound(!) to next mini-goal of 182.0

P.S. Good luck to Sister Sarah on her 5K this weekend! I'll be there to cheer you on!

The Weigh-In Week 60

216! That's what it said on the scale this morning. A loss of 1.4 pounds!

So far "Operation: Eat It" is a big success. I had another one of those crazy, unpredictable weeks though and I could feel "Operation: Eat It" slipping off the tracks a little, so I am going to work extra hard next week to kept on top of things.

The other big news this week is 10K training. I officially started my 10k training on Tues. and I am realizing this is going to be a great challenge. I think the 10K itself will come a lot easier than I thought. Don't get me wrong a lot easier than I thought is still a lot of hard work... but it is not impossible work, which is what my initial impression was.

There are parts of the training though that look like they are going to be killers. Some of the speed work has me a little nervous and the long runs actually stretch out to 9-miles towards the end of the training! That is a lot farther than I ever expected to run in my life.

You can see the whole training schedule here.

I had a great training day yesterday. I ran 4 miles in 37 minutes! As part of that run I ran 3.16 miles in 27:15. A pace right around 8:30/Mile. That is the fastest I have done a 5K in a long time.

Which hopefully bodes well for my 5K race on Sunday. My best official time in a race so far is 26:55. I am secretly hoping to beat that time this weekend. I haven't been training for speed or distance these last few months so beating my time is a long shot, but yesterdays run gives me hope.

Have a great weekend everybody!

Race Wrap Up 2

Thanks to my Father-In-Law's egale eye, quick finger, and fancy camera, I got some great pictures of the race....and some more cool time lapse action shots.

Just finishing the swim.

The start of the bike. Time lapse style.
I am so glad I drove the course the night before so I knew what I was in for. It would have been a rude shock to get out there with all those hills and not be mentally prepared for it.

Nearing the bike finish. This picture makes me look a lot more relaxed than I was. My legs were burning!!!

Starting the Run...Time Lapse Style.
Laura told me after the race that the look on my face at this point made it look like I was hurting...and I was. It could also be a little fear looking at the hill I had to climb. It was 1/2 mile of straight gradual incline and you could see it the whole way.

Sprinting for the finish line.
After the turn at the top of the hill, I managed to settle into a great pace. Going down hill helped I am sure. I felt really good coming into the chute. I was hurting but not nearly as much as I had been in my first race. As always my loving family was there to give me the encourgment I needed to kick in the extra speed right at the end.

Hanging out with my number one motivation!
After both races all three of my girls have rushed to congratulate me. That part of the race is even better than crossing the finish line. It will live as one of my most cherished memories.

There is a pretty good chance this was my last Triathlon for the season, and I am surprised at how sad that makes me. But I have lots more 5K and 10K races before the snow starts falling and I plan to do plenty more Tri's in the coming years.

Race Wrap Up Part 1

The second Triathlon was another huge success.

Once again I could not have asked for a more perfect day. It was cool and sunny with just a little breeze. Perfect racing conditions.

This course was a much tougher course than my first Tri. The course was a little longer and a lot of the bike and half the run were up hill, so while my time is 11 minutes slower than my first race, it is 5 minutes faster than what I thought I would be able to do. I am really proud and a little amazed at how well I did this weekend.

Here are the results:

Total Time: 1:15:39

Overall Place 173/ 386
Gender Place 103 / 177
Division Place 16 / 26
Swim time 12:19
Swim pace 2:06/100 Yards
Swim place 111
Bike time 34:54
Bike mph 17.7
Bike place 180
Run time 23:19
Run pace 9:20
Run place 244

Here's how things compare to my first race. Since the courses are so different, the easiest way to compare is based on ranking and pace data.

I'm not so good with the HTML so you'll have to scroll down to see the times.

RACE INFO HEART OF THE LAKES BREWHOUSE
Overall Place 148/388 173/386
Division Place 21/33 16/26
Gender Place 99/180 103/177
Swim Pace 1:58/100 Yard 2:06/100 yard
Bike Pace 19.9 MPH 17.7 MPH
Run Pace 9:36/Mile 9:20/Mile

My swim pace was only 6 seconds slower. Not bad considering I only swam once since my last race and I started right at the front of the pack. I spent most of the race getting swam over or swimming over other people. It was a whole different experience than the first race.

My bike pace was way slower, but I knew that would be the case with all the hills. Amazingly I kept up a 19MPH Average for the first 6.5 miles. Then I hit the really big hills.

Here is the real shocker, despite using up so much energy busting hills on my bike and having to run half the course uphill, I managed to shave 16 seconds a mile off of my run pace! Woo-Hoo! That may be the biggest accomplishment of all from this race.

I am also really happy to see that I finished in about the same place in my age group and in the overall male rankings for both races, which says to me I wasn't the only one slowed down by those hills.

My overall place is a little lower then Heart of The Lakes, I am pretty sure that has to do with how fast the ladies were in this race. There were some really, really fast women passing me up on the bike course.

Stay tuned for race day pics.

The Wife Weighs In...Week 39

“The what? The who? Tony has a wife? She blogs? I’m so horribly confused.”

Yep…that’s right…I took a little break.

When we last left my weekly weigh-ins (back in week 31), I was feeling as though my schedule was out of control. Now, eight weeks later, it isn’t much better. Work has become increasingly demanding and we’ve had a really busy summer. To be honest, I let it get the better of me, and everything fell apart. I stopped logging my food and was only going to the gym sporadically…very sporadically. I was too stressed, too busy, too overwhelmed, and too exhausted.

Luckily, I didn’t gain a lot of weight during my hiatus, which began on 6/7/08. In fact, I did a pretty good job of maintaining.

I ran into my gym buddy, Tammy, at a graduation party a couple of weeks ago. Her loving first words to me? “Where have you been? I am so mad at you.”

She proceeded to tell me that if you didn’t see me by the following Tuesday she would begin calling me at home when she got to the gym at 5:00 each morning. When I mentioned the fact that she didn’t have my phone number, she squinted her eyes kind of Dirty Harry-style and said, “Yeah, but I know people.”

It was just the kick to the head I needed. I’ve been back on track at the gym for the last two weeks and my eating has fallen back in line, too.

And, finally, while I’m not making any official announcements, I started a nine-week Couch-to-5K program this week, which would prepare me for a race sometime this fall. It’s been going well so far…I’ll keep you updated on this story as it develops.

‘Til next week,

P.S. Just two more weeks until the end of the softball season…that means back to Monday night yoga for me! Hurray!

My update:
6/06/08: 184.8
8/01/08: 186.0 (a gain of 1.2 pounds in eight weeks)
Total loss of 42.4 pounds, 2.8 pounds over low of 183.2, 4.0 pounds from next mini-goal of 182.0

The Weigh-In Week 59

217.4! That is what it said on the scale this morning. A loss of 1.4 pounds.

A perfect loss for a pre-race week. I'll need plenty of energy on Sunday so I would not have wanted to starve myself for a huge loss this week. I guess that goes for any week really.

So far I am pleased with how "Operation Eat It" is going, although I may need to program in a few opportunities for non-fruit/veggie snacks during the week.

Speaking of snacks. One of my co-workers introduced me to Veggie Chips yesterday and I may be in love...with the chips not the co-worker.

As you all know I am not a veggie guy. But Veggie Chips, that is a whole 'nother story. I even ate a green bean chip and green beans make me gag. The green bean chip wasn't my favorite but I didn't hurl so that's a good sign.

Looking at the ingredients they seem to be on par with my all natural Cheeto's or some of the Frito Lay baked chips. Not as good as real veggies, but better then a bag of full fat greasy potato chips.

I'm going to try and pick up some veggie chips for our trip to Duluth.

I am pretty nervous about my Triathlon on Sunday. I don't feel as ready as I did the week before my first race. I'm afraid that the fire to do great isn't burning as strong since I've done it once. I think some of that is a fear that I won't be able to do as well no matter how hard I try. I have to get in the right frame of mind!

I am sure the race day atmosphere will help amp me up!

Our winner this week is Nana Heather. Nicely done Heather!

Have a great weekend everybody! Wish me luck!

Guess How Much I Weigh Contest - Week 59

I finally started tracking calories on Monday. Better late than never.

So far, "Operation: Eat It" has gone well. With the exception of yesterday, I have felt strong and satisfied all week.

I had a crazy day yesterday which threw me off my schedule a bit and I found myself having some weird cravings. I also biked, ran and swam for 20 minutes each yesterday so I worked up quite an appetite. So a little higher calorie count yesterday, but still looks like I am on track for a loss tomorrow.

Today is my last day of workouts before my two days of rest before big race number 2 on Sunday.

I am thinking I'll do weight lifting for my upper body and a short run on the treadmill. Running was by far my weakest event two weeks ago, so I am working extra hard to mentally and physical improve my run.

Stats for the week of May 19th.

Calories Consumed: From Monday morning through Wed. night I have consumed aprox. 7068 calories.

Calories Burned: From Monday morning through Wed. night I have burned aprox. 12085 calories.

Let the guessing begin. Good Luck!

Wii Fit Is Mean

Day one of "Operation Eat It" was a huge success. According to the scale I lost 4 pounds yesterday! Absolutley all of it was water weight. After a long run yesterday in the heat and humidity and then a softball game last night I don't think I have a pint of water left in my body.

There was another incident this weekend that really jump started the whole thinking about the right way to recommit myself to losing weight.

On Saturday Laura and I got together with some friends to play Wii. They had just gotten the Wii Fit and I have been very curious so I asked if we could try it out.

You know what, Wii fit is kind of a bully!

To get the whole breadth of the Wii Fit experience we set up a new character for me. The Fit has you stand on the balance pad and asks you a bunch of questions then it weighs you, calculates your BMI and creates an avatar for you.

Here's mine.

Check out the gut...
and the big butt...
and the lack of muscle tone.

All things I have been working so hard on.

My Avatar didn't start out looking like this. When I first stepped on the balance pad I had a nice normal sized Mii.

Then the Fit weighed me in at 221. Pride requires me to point out this was fully clothed, after a huge pasta diner with my cell phone, car keys and wallet in my pocket.

The fit was then nice enough to point out that my BMI put me in the obese category as it slowly morphed my Avatar from the svelte original into the chunky monkey you see above.

I didn't let the experience ruin my night but I must say I was sufficiently humbled.

All joking aside, I find the Wii Fit's snarky attitude kind of refreshing. There is no cuddling or hand holding here. No justifying. No, "you need to lose 30 pounds but that's ok because you are still beautiful on the inside". The Wii Fit is all business and now that I have gotten over my mild embarrassment of a group BMI outing, I am glad the Wii Fit was there to give me a not so gentle reminder to stand up straight and get things back on track.

You best watch out though Wii Fit, 'cause next time I come for a visit, I'll be ready for ya.

New Strategy

It was a great training weekend...not such a good eating weekend.

I biked more than 20 miles on Friday with my ride back and forth to work. It helped that I got lost both ways. Don't ask how, I'm still not sure myself. I did a 3.8 mile run on Saturday and a split brick on Sunday. The split brick was based on a suggestion from one of my triathlete co-workers. I bike for 15 minutes, ran for 15 minutes, biked for another 15 minutes then ran for another 15 minutes. I was feeling pretty good until I went out for my run today. About a mile in today my legs started feeling like lead. I think it's a good thing I am taking tomorrow off.

Despite all that training I still gained weight over the weekend.

It got me thinking about how I am going to make this commitment to continued weight loss work.

Here's what I realized.

My eating habits have changed but so has my lifestyle. I am eating much better then I ever have and I am eating for the right reasons. I eat because I am hunger, not because I am bored or because I have uncontrollable cravings. Only problem is I am hungry a lot.

In the last 5 months, I have greatly increased the amount and intensity of my physical activity. I have been trying to do all this training while eating like I did when I was actively working to lose weight.

Generally this means I am hungry all the time and I break down and snack on foods that are not the best for me... and because I am so hungry it tends to take more to satiate me. I'm not talking gorging myself, it's not even so much that I have been over eating, I've just been eating the wrong things.

In short, I have tried to eat better but I have not been eating smarter.

So what am I going to do to change all this. For now, I am going to plan my food each day and work to stick to it. Beyond breakfast, lunch and dinner, I will plan snacks like fruits and vegetables into my day so I don't go home ravenous and eat way to much for dinner or feel the need for a late night snack ten minutes before I go to bed.

The goal is to plan on eating more each day, but be smarter about what I eat. Pretty elementary right. Wonder why it has taken me 5 months to figure it out.
