Race Wrap Up 2

Thanks to my Father-In-Law's egale eye, quick finger, and fancy camera, I got some great pictures of the race....and some more cool time lapse action shots.

Just finishing the swim.

The start of the bike. Time lapse style.
I am so glad I drove the course the night before so I knew what I was in for. It would have been a rude shock to get out there with all those hills and not be mentally prepared for it.

Nearing the bike finish. This picture makes me look a lot more relaxed than I was. My legs were burning!!!

Starting the Run...Time Lapse Style.
Laura told me after the race that the look on my face at this point made it look like I was hurting...and I was. It could also be a little fear looking at the hill I had to climb. It was 1/2 mile of straight gradual incline and you could see it the whole way.

Sprinting for the finish line.
After the turn at the top of the hill, I managed to settle into a great pace. Going down hill helped I am sure. I felt really good coming into the chute. I was hurting but not nearly as much as I had been in my first race. As always my loving family was there to give me the encourgment I needed to kick in the extra speed right at the end.

Hanging out with my number one motivation!
After both races all three of my girls have rushed to congratulate me. That part of the race is even better than crossing the finish line. It will live as one of my most cherished memories.

There is a pretty good chance this was my last Triathlon for the season, and I am surprised at how sad that makes me. But I have lots more 5K and 10K races before the snow starts falling and I plan to do plenty more Tri's in the coming years.

Race Wrap Up Part 1

The second Triathlon was another huge success.

Once again I could not have asked for a more perfect day. It was cool and sunny with just a little breeze. Perfect racing conditions.

This course was a much tougher course than my first Tri. The course was a little longer and a lot of the bike and half the run were up hill, so while my time is 11 minutes slower than my first race, it is 5 minutes faster than what I thought I would be able to do. I am really proud and a little amazed at how well I did this weekend.

Here are the results:

Total Time: 1:15:39

Overall Place 173/ 386
Gender Place 103 / 177
Division Place 16 / 26
Swim time 12:19
Swim pace 2:06/100 Yards
Swim place 111
Bike time 34:54
Bike mph 17.7
Bike place 180
Run time 23:19
Run pace 9:20
Run place 244

Here's how things compare to my first race. Since the courses are so different, the easiest way to compare is based on ranking and pace data.

I'm not so good with the HTML so you'll have to scroll down to see the times.

RACE INFO HEART OF THE LAKES BREWHOUSE
Overall Place 148/388 173/386
Division Place 21/33 16/26
Gender Place 99/180 103/177
Swim Pace 1:58/100 Yard 2:06/100 yard
Bike Pace 19.9 MPH 17.7 MPH
Run Pace 9:36/Mile 9:20/Mile

My swim pace was only 6 seconds slower. Not bad considering I only swam once since my last race and I started right at the front of the pack. I spent most of the race getting swam over or swimming over other people. It was a whole different experience than the first race.

My bike pace was way slower, but I knew that would be the case with all the hills. Amazingly I kept up a 19MPH Average for the first 6.5 miles. Then I hit the really big hills.

Here is the real shocker, despite using up so much energy busting hills on my bike and having to run half the course uphill, I managed to shave 16 seconds a mile off of my run pace! Woo-Hoo! That may be the biggest accomplishment of all from this race.

I am also really happy to see that I finished in about the same place in my age group and in the overall male rankings for both races, which says to me I wasn't the only one slowed down by those hills.

My overall place is a little lower then Heart of The Lakes, I am pretty sure that has to do with how fast the ladies were in this race. There were some really, really fast women passing me up on the bike course.

Stay tuned for race day pics.

The Wife Weighs In...Week 39

“The what? The who? Tony has a wife? She blogs? I’m so horribly confused.”

Yep…that’s right…I took a little break.

When we last left my weekly weigh-ins (back in week 31), I was feeling as though my schedule was out of control. Now, eight weeks later, it isn’t much better. Work has become increasingly demanding and we’ve had a really busy summer. To be honest, I let it get the better of me, and everything fell apart. I stopped logging my food and was only going to the gym sporadically…very sporadically. I was too stressed, too busy, too overwhelmed, and too exhausted.

Luckily, I didn’t gain a lot of weight during my hiatus, which began on 6/7/08. In fact, I did a pretty good job of maintaining.

I ran into my gym buddy, Tammy, at a graduation party a couple of weeks ago. Her loving first words to me? “Where have you been? I am so mad at you.”

She proceeded to tell me that if you didn’t see me by the following Tuesday she would begin calling me at home when she got to the gym at 5:00 each morning. When I mentioned the fact that she didn’t have my phone number, she squinted her eyes kind of Dirty Harry-style and said, “Yeah, but I know people.”

It was just the kick to the head I needed. I’ve been back on track at the gym for the last two weeks and my eating has fallen back in line, too.

And, finally, while I’m not making any official announcements, I started a nine-week Couch-to-5K program this week, which would prepare me for a race sometime this fall. It’s been going well so far…I’ll keep you updated on this story as it develops.

‘Til next week,

P.S. Just two more weeks until the end of the softball season…that means back to Monday night yoga for me! Hurray!

My update:
6/06/08: 184.8
8/01/08: 186.0 (a gain of 1.2 pounds in eight weeks)
Total loss of 42.4 pounds, 2.8 pounds over low of 183.2, 4.0 pounds from next mini-goal of 182.0

The Weigh-In Week 59

217.4! That is what it said on the scale this morning. A loss of 1.4 pounds.

A perfect loss for a pre-race week. I'll need plenty of energy on Sunday so I would not have wanted to starve myself for a huge loss this week. I guess that goes for any week really.

So far I am pleased with how "Operation Eat It" is going, although I may need to program in a few opportunities for non-fruit/veggie snacks during the week.

Speaking of snacks. One of my co-workers introduced me to Veggie Chips yesterday and I may be in love...with the chips not the co-worker.

As you all know I am not a veggie guy. But Veggie Chips, that is a whole 'nother story. I even ate a green bean chip and green beans make me gag. The green bean chip wasn't my favorite but I didn't hurl so that's a good sign.

Looking at the ingredients they seem to be on par with my all natural Cheeto's or some of the Frito Lay baked chips. Not as good as real veggies, but better then a bag of full fat greasy potato chips.

I'm going to try and pick up some veggie chips for our trip to Duluth.

I am pretty nervous about my Triathlon on Sunday. I don't feel as ready as I did the week before my first race. I'm afraid that the fire to do great isn't burning as strong since I've done it once. I think some of that is a fear that I won't be able to do as well no matter how hard I try. I have to get in the right frame of mind!

I am sure the race day atmosphere will help amp me up!

Our winner this week is Nana Heather. Nicely done Heather!

Have a great weekend everybody! Wish me luck!

Guess How Much I Weigh Contest - Week 59

I finally started tracking calories on Monday. Better late than never.

So far, "Operation: Eat It" has gone well. With the exception of yesterday, I have felt strong and satisfied all week.

I had a crazy day yesterday which threw me off my schedule a bit and I found myself having some weird cravings. I also biked, ran and swam for 20 minutes each yesterday so I worked up quite an appetite. So a little higher calorie count yesterday, but still looks like I am on track for a loss tomorrow.

Today is my last day of workouts before my two days of rest before big race number 2 on Sunday.

I am thinking I'll do weight lifting for my upper body and a short run on the treadmill. Running was by far my weakest event two weeks ago, so I am working extra hard to mentally and physical improve my run.

Step right up, step right up.
Guess how much I weigh and win a fabulous prize.

Wii Fit Is Mean

Day one of "Operation Eat It" was a huge success. According to the scale I lost 4 pounds yesterday! Absolutley all of it was water weight. After a long run yesterday in the heat and humidity and then a softball game last night I don't think I have a pint of water left in my body.

There was another incident this weekend that really jump started the whole thinking about the right way to recommit myself to losing weight.

On Saturday Laura and I got together with some friends to play Wii. They had just gotten the Wii Fit and I have been very curious so I asked if we could try it out.

You know what, Wii fit is kind of a bully!

To get the whole breadth of the Wii Fit experience we set up a new character for me. The Fit has you stand on the balance pad and asks you a bunch of questions then it weighs you, calculates your BMI and creates an avatar for you.

Here's mine.

Check out the gut...
and the big butt...
and the lack of muscle tone.

All things I have been working so hard on.

My Avatar didn't start out looking like this. When I first stepped on the balance pad I had a nice normal sized Mii.

Then the Fit weighed me in at 221. Pride requires me to point out this was fully clothed, after a huge pasta diner with my cell phone, car keys and wallet in my pocket.

The fit was then nice enough to point out that my BMI put me in the obese category as it slowly morphed my Avatar from the svelte original into the chunky monkey you see above.

I didn't let the experience ruin my night but I must say I was sufficiently humbled.

All joking aside, I find the Wii Fit's snarky attitude kind of refreshing. There is no cuddling or hand holding here. No justifying. No, "you need to lose 30 pounds but that's ok because you are still beautiful on the inside". The Wii Fit is all business and now that I have gotten over my mild embarrassment of a group BMI outing, I am glad the Wii Fit was there to give me a not so gentle reminder to stand up straight and get things back on track.

You best watch out though Wii Fit, 'cause next time I come for a visit, I'll be ready for ya.

New Strategy

It was a great training weekend...not such a good eating weekend.

I biked more than 20 miles on Friday with my ride back and forth to work. It helped that I got lost both ways. Don't ask how, I'm still not sure myself. I did a 3.8 mile run on Saturday and a split brick on Sunday. The split brick was based on a suggestion from one of my triathlete co-workers. I bike for 15 minutes, ran for 15 minutes, biked for another 15 minutes then ran for another 15 minutes. I was feeling pretty good until I went out for my run today. About a mile in today my legs started feeling like lead. I think it's a good thing I am taking tomorrow off.

Despite all that training I still gained weight over the weekend.

It got me thinking about how I am going to make this commitment to continued weight loss work.

Here's what I realized.

My eating habits have changed but so has my lifestyle. I am eating much better then I ever have and I am eating for the right reasons. I eat because I am hunger, not because I am bored or because I have uncontrollable cravings. Only problem is I am hungry a lot.

In the last 5 months, I have greatly increased the amount and intensity of my physical activity. I have been trying to do all this training while eating like I did when I was actively working to lose weight.

Generally this means I am hungry all the time and I break down and snack on foods that are not the best for me... and because I am so hungry it tends to take more to satiate me. I'm not talking gorging myself, it's not even so much that I have been over eating, I've just been eating the wrong things.

In short, I have tried to eat better but I have not been eating smarter.

So what am I going to do to change all this. For now, I am going to plan my food each day and work to stick to it. Beyond breakfast, lunch and dinner, I will plan snacks like fruits and vegetables into my day so I don't go home ravenous and eat way to much for dinner or feel the need for a late night snack ten minutes before I go to bed.

The goal is to plan on eating more each day, but be smarter about what I eat. Pretty elementary right. Wonder why it has taken me 5 months to figure it out.

The Weigh-In Week 58

218.8. That's what it said on the scale this morning. A gain of 2.4 pounds.

Hate to say I told you so.

Instead of wallowing in self pity. I got up and road my bike to work, despite wet, dirty roads and a threat of torrential down pour.

I got drenched, I got muddy, I got lost and I was late for work and yet it was the best decision I could have made.

It is amazing to me how fast I can start to feel like I am out of shape.

Last week I achieved my greatest physical triumph ever, yesterday I felt like a 300 pound couch potato. I know it's mostly mental. Which means I need to do some serious mental and physical training in the next 5 days if I want to have any hope of a repeat performance at the Brewhouse Triathlon.

Calorie counting starts tomorrow. For reals this time!

Have a great weekend everybody.

Guess How Much I Weigh Contest - Week 58

Sadly there will be a gain this week... and it will be significant.

I am at a gain right now and I am on the go from 7am to 10pm with no chance of getting in a workout.

What a lousy way to start my first week of weight loss re-commitment.

Here's how I am looking at it though. This public embarrassment after such a bravado filled announcement is just the kick in the shorts I need to really get things back on track!

Or is that just an excuse?

I know these little bummer bits of info before the contest are not the most motivating to you the guesser either. Sorry 'bout that. If you don't vote this week, be sure to come vote next week. I promise to be full of positivity next week, cause I am working my tail off starting first thing tomorrow morning.

And lets remember I did finish my first triathlon less then a week ago, that's something positive.

So What's Next? Part 2

So far this week my commitment to getting my weight loss back on track has not gone so well. I know I just made the commitment yesterday... but... well this may be harder than I thought. I am still committed though. I just have to get back in the grove and that may take a few days or weeks...hopefully days. It's all about thinking about my actions and exercising some will power... and avoiding meetings with food...lots and lots of food.

Enough on that.

On to what's next.

This is the exciting stuff you have all been waiting to hear. What is my next challenge going to be.

I have conquered the 5K.

I have mastered the Triathlon.

So what feat will I attempt next.

How about another Triathlon. For starters.

On Monday I singed up for the Brewhouse Triathlon in Duluth. The race is on August 3rd. A couple of the people I work with who each did one triathlon have been telling me how silly it is to train so hard and only do it once. It is something they very much regret. And I for one think they are right...besides you get a really cool pint glass at this race.

The Brewhouse race is slightly longer than last weekends race. 1/3 Mile Swim, 10.3 Mile Bike and a 2.5 Mile Run.

After that I will be doing Lauren's Run For a Reason! in Maple Grove. A 5K to benefit the Sudden Unexplained Death In Childhood Program. That is the following weekend on August 10th.

This will be my sisters first 5K race and I figured since I want to be there to support her, I might as well run the race as well.

Beyond that I hope to get one or two more races in this fall including the James Page Blubber Run 5K in October, which follows almost the exact same course I run here at work.

But wait there is more. I am officially announcing for the first time (except to my Lovely Wife) that I am committed to doing a 10K race before the end of the year.

Nike has this thing going on on August 31, called the Human Race 10K. It's a total gimmick to sell more Nike Pus thingies... but I am a sucker for a gimmick, so I'll be doing it.

They have like 25 official races around the world and then everyone else is supposed to run with their Nike Plus and upload their time to the website. A friend of mine said he would borrow me his Nike Plus, so I figure I will give it a try.

It won't be my official 10K, it will be a low key, no pressure trial run.

Right now I am tentatively planing on making my first 10K the Autumn Woods Classic on October 11th in Maple Grove. I say tentatively based on social calender and training schedule. But that is what I am shooting for.

There will for sure be more Triathlons in my future... whether I try for a long course remains to be seen.

I am also toying with the idea of trying a half marathon, but I am not ready to commit to that yet either. Both the long course tri and the half marathon will take more training time, time I am not sure I have right now.

I am itching to push myself though, both for the motivation to keep working out and to see just what I am capable of.

More on all of this as the time for each event draws closer.

So What's Next? Part 1

So, what's next for me?

It's a question I have been asking myself a lot this past week.

I have some thoughts on what else I want to accomplish physically, but I'll talk about that tomorrow.

What is on my mind right now is getting my weight loss journey back on track. As happy as I am with my current weight, it was never my intention that this would be my final weight.

I have basically been in a maintenance mode since January. While I did hit a new low in April, I quickly bounced back up and have pretty much been floating between 218 and 216 ever since. A lot of this has to do with my training for the 5k and then the Triathlon. Since those things were more exciting and more immediate my focus just natural went towards working out.

Looking at the pictures from the triathlon just reinforced my desire to continue on my weight loss journey. I am really, really proud of what I have done so far, but there is nothing like standing side by side shirtless with a bunch of world class athlete's to remind you how far you have to go.

I say that jokingly, but in all honesty my health journey has always been two fold. First and most importantly I wanted to get in shape, I have done that. But secondly I have always wanted to work on toning my body. I'm not looking for a six pack, but a 3 pack wouldn't be so bad. The fact is, no matter how hard I work in the gym, if I still have 30 pounds of excess fat on my middle those muscles are not going to show through.

So, I think it is finally time to make a real effort to get to my next weight loss goal of 208.

Towards that end I plan to get back to tracking calories and sticking with it this time. I'll also be taking a hard look at what and how much I am eating now and I am going to do my best to get better at watching what I eat all week not just Monday - Friday.

Laura and I have also made a pact to start holding each other accountable again, which will make a huge difference in us being succesful.

I am at a very different stage of weight loss now, and I have yet to take the time to figure out how this new body of mine is going to work. I guess now is that time.

Like I have said all along, this journey is far from over.

A Few More Race Day Thoughts

Scroll down for the full race day report.

I have to point out that race day was a huge success for more than just me.

My Brother-In-Law Evan finished the race in under an hour at 59:21. Which is a huge accomplishment for his first time out.

My dad finished the race at 1:03:42. This was my Dad's 3rd or 4th time doing the race and this was his best time so far. A new personal Record after taking a break for 6 years. Prety darn good if you ask me.

Dad also finished in 50th place on the bike out of 388 racers.

As for me I had a lot of things I am happy with besides my finish.

1. I finished the swim only 26 seconds behind Evan, and he has been training like a mad man for this race...with a lot of conentration on the swim.

2. My Dad didn't pass me until the last 8 minutes of the race. From the very beginning I assumed that I would finish the swim before my Dad and then he would pass me within the first few miles of the bike. For me to stay ahead of him for almost the entire race was amazing to me. I think the thought that he was going to pass me at any second is what pushed me to fly so fast through the bike course.

3. I finished less than a minute behind my dad.

My dad has always been the epitome of fitness in my life. He has been the unattainable role model in my journey to getting fit and he has been my benchmark for many of my achievements. The thought has always been "Well my dad is the most in shape guy I know, so If I can be even close to what he can do then I have to be doing really good."

I had no allusions about beating my dad in this triathlon, my goal was to finish less than 10 minutes behind him and my brother-in-law Evan. So for me to finish 5 minutes behind Evan and less then a minute behind my Dad, well that is the biggest accomplishment of all.

I have no clue who the rest of the people I raced against were. I don't know how hard they trained or what kind of shape they are in. I know that Evan and my dad are in amazing shape and that they trained hard. The fact that I was able to finish so close to them, out of all of my race day victories, that is the one I am most proud of.

The Full Race Report

Leading up to race day I was a bundle of nerves. I had not been sleeping well all week, but Saturday night I slept like a baby and when I woke up on Sunday morning I was surprisingly calm. A sort of Zen state had taken over. Sure I was excited but the nerves really weren't there.

I worked a lot on being mentally prepared for the day. I think that helped.

We got to the race course and things started flying. We got our race day packets, got our numbers marked on our arms and our legs, got our race chips and set off to set up our transition area.

I am amazed how fast the two hours went between arriving at the race and the start time.

The whole day was kind of like that, a blur.

My Dad and Evan (my brother-in-law) and I were all in the last heat of the day, heat 17. So we got to see how everything worked while we waited for our start time. Once we got on to the beach to start the swim I was feeling pretty confident that I knew what to expect.

I decided to hang back a little in the swim so I didn't get freaked out by the surge of swimmers all starting at once. Turns out I may have been better off trying to jump out front. I was probably a better swimmer than half the people in my heat, so I ended up having to swim around a lot of people.

The swim is still a blur. I can't believe how well it went and how little I needed to rest. I got out of the water and I was feeling tired but pure adrenaline was pushing me to go, go, go. And I saw my family right there cheering me on which helped give me an extra bit of speed going up the beach.

It was a long barefoot run on blacktop to get to my changing station for the transition to the bike. Again this part is all a blur. I feel like I made my transition really well, but I couldn't tell you what I did good or bad. I was on auto pilot.

The bike was by far my favorite part of the race, and it shows in my time. I was flying. My average speed on the bike was almost 3mph faster than my workout average. I passed a ton of people too, which made me feel good.

We all had our heat numbers marked on the back of our leg so it became a fun game to see how many people I could pass from the most heats in front of me.

About a mile into the bike I meet up with a guy who seemed to have the same pace as I did. We spent the whole race jocking back and forth and had some fun banter going on. It was just one of the many ways I felt like I really belonged in this place.

The bike to run transition went a little less smooth. Through no fault of his own my brother-in-law knocked over the bike rack so all our stuff was lying on the ground. It threw me for a loop, but I recovered pretty fast and hit the road.

The run was by far my least favorite part of the race. My legs felt good but I was losing steam fast. It is amazing to me how far 2.5 miles can feel. There were three water stations on the run, and every time I hit one I thought to myself this has to be the turn around. And every time my will broke just a little more. But I kept on running. I was tempted to take a walk break a few times but I knew I could make it, and somehow I kept on going.

Turns out I wasn't going as slow as I thought either. My split times on the run are almost 30 seconds faster than I was doing in practice. Gotta love that adrenaline.

As I rounded the corner to come into the finish area, I started thinking,"I have to put on a good show", so I kicked it in to high gear and out and out sprinted for the last two or three hundred yards.

As I crossed the finish line I heard the announcer say my name and I got a little misty, but before I had a chance to get all emotional I was swept into the athletes area where my timing chip was removed and then I was herded to the food tent and all I could think about was getting some water in me. So while it was an extremely emotionally victory there was not a lot of time for the emotions to take hold.

All in all it was one of the best days of my life. And I am so happy I was able to share it with my Dad and Evan and Teresa and Judy and my wonderful wife and my adorable kids and all of my family.

This is an Accomplishment with a capital A. One to go in the books. Never in a million years would I have thought this is something I could accomplish...and accomplish well. Heck, never in a million years would I have thought this is something I'd want to accomplish.

Think about it. 1 year ago I couldn't run for more than 2 minutes with out fear of losing my lunch and know I am a triathlete. That is something you can never take away from me.

Although, to put all this self backslapping into perspective, there was a guy at the race who had lost 360 pounds and he completed the long course, which was more than double what I did and it sounded like he has become a tri regular. So I can't get to high and mighty, since there are a lot of people out there with more amazing stories than mine.

Then again...I do feel very proud!

Thanks again for all the cheers and support and encouragement. And thank you so much to all my loving family and my loving wife for being so amazing during this whole period. I know I can get a little obsessed so I really appreciate your patience and understanding.

Tony

Awesome!!!

There is no other way to describe the weekend. It was absolutely awesome. Everything I wanted and hoped it would be.

The Weigh-In Week 57

3 days and counting.

216.4!!! That's what it said on the scale this morning. A loss of 1.8 pounds.

Let me tell you about the power of sweating it out.

I made some good food decisions yesterday. It helped that the food at my all day "lock in" was pretty bad. We also went to an impromptu 2nd 90th birthday for my Grandma last night and grabbed McDonald's on the way. This may have been the biggest miracle of all. I ordered a 5 piece chicken select and no French fries. I don't think I have ever in my life gone to McDonald's and not ordered French fries.

Despite these good decisions I still ate more than I normally would on a Thursday and I figured I was headed for a tiny loss or a gain...and then I went for my late night 3.5 mile run with Teresa and Judy.

We hit the road about 9pm thinking the heat and humidity would be less after the sun went down. We were wrong. The run was great, but by the time we got done I think I sweated out 4 pounds of water.

And that is the power of sweating it out.

Regardless of how I got here it was really nice two see a good size loss on the scale this morning after two weeks of gains.

It's just one more reason to feel confident going into the race this weekend.

And I am feeling confident. Still a little nervous, but mostly confident.

Expect a full race report first thing Monday morning.

Have a great weekend everybody!

Guess How Much I Weigh Contest - Week 57

4 days and counting!

I am in an all day meeting today so I'll make this quick.

If I were to do my official weigh-in today I would have a nice little loss. Sadly I am eating breakfast and lunch at a Country Club today so I imagine the food will be on the "wedding dinner" side vs. the "looking to lose a few pounds and run a Triathlon in 4 days" side. So there are no guarantee for tomorrow's weigh in.

There are two things working in my favor though.

1. I am extremely motivated to eat well today.

2. I am doing a late night run with Teresa and Judy tonight after the girls go to bed. It will be my final workout before race day. The exercise should help with the weigh-in too.

Good luck guessing. I'll talk to you tomorrow.

I ate poorly on Sunday and Monday.

I ate better on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I haven't weighed myself since Monday morning and that weigh in was not all that encouraging... all though it did come after a huge late night dinner.

So my guess is as good as yours. I guess we'll all be surprised tomorrow.

Step right up, step right up.
Guess how much I weigh and win a fabulous prize.

To Recap:
Every Thursday I give you my stats for the week and you guess what you think the scale will say on Friday morning. The winner is the first person who guesses my weight / weight loss for the week without going over or the person who is closest without going over. Go ahead and click on comments at the bottom of this post and leave your guess.

I will post the winner when I post my weight on Fri. morning. If we get ten or more guesses I will have a prize for the winner.

Let the guessing begin. Good Luck!

5 Days and Counting

I just came back from my last brick before the race and I am feeling good. I did a 6.5 mile bike ride and a 2.5 mile run. I meant to go a little slower today but ended up keeping about the same pace that I have had lately. 25 Minutes for the run and a an average of 15.8 MPH for the bike.

A few of the people I work with have done this race before so they have been giving me all kinds of advice, as has my Dad, who has also done the race before.

I have to say I am equally nervous and excited at this point.

6 Days and Counting

Just in case anyone is keeping track.

Monday, July 14, 2008

7 Days and Counting

Just 7 more days until race day!!!!

I have set my goal. I want to finish in under 1 hour and 20 minutes. It is a totally doable goal...assuming I can figure out the transitions and the wind isn't too bad.

My secret goal is to finish in under 1 hour 10 minutes. That would be really pushing it based on my training times so far.

I had a great training weekend. My day and I did a 16 mile bike on Saturday. Dad managed to pick a course that was almost completly up hill. Tough on the legs but good for the training.

Then, on Sunday I did another brick. 10 miles on the bike and a 2.8 mile run. And I felt the best I have felt so far. I am gaining more and more confidence.

On Sunday's bike ride I ran into my Tri Training partners Teresa and Judy completly by coincidence. That was a fun surprise. We are going to try and schedule one last group run on Thursday night as a final motivational kick in the shorts.

Today is a rest day.
Tomorrow I am in the gym.
Wedensady I will do my last brick.(Probaly a short one so I don't wear out)
Thursday I will try a low intensity run with Teresa nad Judy.
Friday and Saturday are rest days.

The wind was a killer on both Saturday and Sunday. It made me realize the wind will be a huge factor in the time I put up on Sunday.

On my Sunday bike ride it took me 24 minutes to go 4.6 miles against the wind. The same distance heading home took me only 13 minutes.

THe Weigh-In Week 56

218.2. That is what it said on the scale this morning. A gain of 1.2 pounds.

Not a good way to start my final week of Tri training.

I think it is time to start tracking calories once again. And that is just what I am going to do.

Next week is going to be tough. I am fortunate to be able to work out on my lunch break at work...normally. Unfortunately next week I am in a series of all day meetings so no lunch break workouts on Monday, Wednesday or Thursday and a lot less control over my food than I would like. I will have to get in my workouts after the girls go to bed each night next week and hopefully the looming Triathlon will motivate me to be really good at the lunch buffets.

It's supposed to hit 95 today, so I think I may be running inside on the treadmill for the first time in months. Not exactly happy about it, but I'd rather be bored on the treadmill then dead of heat exhaustion on the trail.

Have a great weekend everybody.

Guess How Much I Weigh Contest - Week 56

I have no clue this week.

I worked out like mad over the weekend.

I ate poorly on Sunday and Monday.

I ate better on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mega Brick

Now I am starting to gain a little confidence that I will actually be able to finish this race.

I just got back from doing my brick and today I manged to ride 9 miles then get off the bike and run a full 5k. That's right I ran 3.1 miles after biking for 9 miles.

My legs hurt now.

Honestly I wasn't trying to run that far, but I didn't know exactly where the 2.5 mile mark was and by the time I figured I had to have done 2.5 miles I was feeling so good I just decided to keep on going.

I didn't set any speed records, (36 minutes on the bike and 30 minutes on the run) but I am jumping for joy that I managed to complete the whole thing for the second time.

Or I would be jumping for joy if my legs hadn't turned to jelly shortly after I got out of the shower.

Only 11 more days to go!

THe Weigh-In Week 55

I hurt....everywhere.

But first on to important business.

The Weigh-In.

217. That is what it said on the scale on Friday morning. A gain of .2 pounds.

A miracle if ever there was one. I do have to qualify this weigh-in. I used my parents scale which only measures by whole numbers. So who knows where in the range of 217 I actually ended up. Still, it was a gain of less then one pound on a week that I thought was going to be a total write off.

Now to my hurt.

We played hard this weekend as scheduled... maybe even harder than scheduled.

Every muscle in my body is aching.

We skied, we wake boarded, we swam, we biked, we ran. We did it all.

Saturday was the big day for Tri training though. I managed to get all three events in in one day.

We started the morning with a 12 mile bike ride. Then immediately did a 2 mile run (with a little walking). Then we went to a carnival. (Where my brave little girls went on their first Farris Wheel ride...which they loved.) Then my sister and I went for a 1.5 mile run and a 1.5 mile walk. Then I went for a quarter mile swim.

I also got in a 4 mile run on Friday (with just a little walking towards the end) and a .5 mile swim on Sunday.

All-in-all a great training weekend.

And don't worry, there was plenty of playing going on too! We hardly left the water all day Friday and Sunday.

Hope you all had an amazing weekend too.

Less then 2 weeks to the Tri!

Write Off

This week is quickly becoming a write off week. I compounded a day with no exercise yesterday by eating like a mad man. I didn't even realize I was doing it until I went to bed last night with a horrible upset stomach.

My body is no longer able to eat like that. It wasn't even that horrible, compared to the days of Old. Chipotle for lunch and a big dinner and a few snacks. But it was enough to most likely post another gain this week... well, combined with some heavy eating at the company party on Friday...You know what, lets just chalk this week up to a holiday week and recommit ourselves to the goal starting next Monday.

Actually, with the Triathlon looming, I can't afford to write off the rest of the week. So let's do it this way. Let's consider this past weekend and the early part of this week the Holiday weekend and then I can spend the Holiday weekend working hard and playing hard.

That should work.

I hope to get in some runs, bikes and swimming over the long weekend. Probably not all back to back.

Contest and weigh-in will happen as scheduled...although the weigh -in post may have to wait until Monday...unless someone brings a computer to the cabin.

Celebration Time

"What are we celebrating", you might ask?

"Good question", I might reply.

Then again you might not ask, so how 'bout I just tell you.

Two big milestones, that is what we are celebrating.

Milestone Number 1:

My tri buddy Teresa, (Remember Teresa? She's the reason we are doing this crazy Triathlon in the first place) called on Saturday night to see if I wanted to squeeze in a workout on Sunday morning and my lovely wife was kind enough to give up our quiet Sunday at home. So first thing Sunday I hopped on my bike and headed over to Teresa's. Including my 4.5 mile bike ride to Teresa's, I did a 15 mile bike ride and then we hopped of the bikes and went for a 2.7 Mile run.

That's right. I finally got my Triathlon length back-to-back out of the way... plus a few miles.

So now we know I can finish the race. Thanks Teresa and Judy for the great workout.

Milestone Number 2:
This afternoon I stretched my run to 4.07 Miles in 37:30! That is my farthest run so far.

I'm feeling pretty good...pretty sore...but pretty good too!

Hope you all had as amazing a weekend as we did.
